He looked up as they moved out of the light, and he could see starlight. In the distance, a great black storm cloud grew and contracted, blue lightning surging and striking the border of Misla.

He looked around. He was on a massive platform. This was the place where the Night Crystals were, but it had been lowered into another position. He looked around and then realized they were on top of the mountain of lower Misla.

Looking up, he could see the control tower of Misla smoking, yet Marog’s tower was actually off to the side of the platform. There were chunks of debris lining the outer portions of the circle, and the Night Crystals were not simply floating as they were before, but were all affixed into a silver staff that floated in the center of the platform.

“Where is he?” Sareen asked.

Valrin stepped forward, looking behind him and seeing a trail of broken debris floating up and behind them, suspended in midair, leading all the way to the upper level.

“I think our friends did quite a job,” Valrin said.

“That they did, young one.”

Marog emerged, appearing as he had since Valrin was on Misla. An old man, almost feeble in appearance now, but holding Vadinar by the throat, dragging him out from behind debris.

“Quite a mess, but now we have this lovely platform. Not where I would have put it, as I prefer a view of the entire city, but none of this has gone exactly as planned.”

He held Vadinar up in the air, squeezing his throat.

“You and that other one were quite an annoyance. I cannot believe you thought you could contend with my power. You were the one who put the spell on my Night Crystal. I hope you enjoy seeing your failure complete.”

Marog reached out, drawing his silver staff toward him. He placed the staff on Vadinar’s head, and the Night Crystals began to burn brightly.

The Rusis screamed.

Sareen threw her spear, but Marog simply looked at it, and it fell to the ground.

Vadinar’s screams ceased, and his body shriveled into a mere caste.

Marog crushed him, brushing the dust off him as he looked toward Valrin and Sareen.

Sareen was breathing heavily, her spells already ignited.

“Valrin, you have forced me into a position that I do not like. The Dwemhar would not agree with these low vibrational acts. Surely the Riakar who lived in your world would not be okay with this. Truly, Evurn and Aeveam would rather you take a path of peace.”

“There is no peace with you. Only submission.”

Marog smiled. “And that is what I have always said, but you have kept trying to stop me. Well, Valrin, I thought you might have seen a greater light, but it was The One who veiled your intentions from me, cut me off from my realm of seeing, and even hid enemies in plain sight. The One has become something else, something beyond what I knew, but—” He looked up. “There is still time, and as you and I move toward our final dance, we have a lovely platform in which to do it.
